How a weighted blanket helps with autism and ADHD
For children with ADHD or autism, a weighted blanket can help regulate stimuli better. The gentle pressure of a 2 kg blanket provides a subtle form of deep pressure stimulation, which calms the nervous system and helps the body relax. This makes it easier to unwind after a busy day and supports better sleep, without the blanket feeling too heavy for young or sensitive children.

Weighted blankets for children are much smaller so that the total weight of the blanket is not too high is reached, but you still have enough weight on the body to notice the effect.
As an example: a weighted blanket of 2.2 kg with the dimensions 90 x 120 cm has a weight per square meter of about 2 kg. A weighted blanket of 6 kg with the dimensions 150 x 200 cm has a weight of exactly 2 kg per square meter.
Both weighted blankets therefore exert about the same pressure per square meter.
Imagine your son or daughter weighs around 18 kg. A weighted blanket of 6 kg is then quite heavy to move by yourself. A weighted blanket of 2.2 kg, on the other hand, is manageable easily.
If your son or daughter is a bit taller, then you can 6 kg weighted blanket try out. Always make sure that he/she can easily remove the weighted blanket by themselves remove, and lie comfortably under it.
If the 100 x 150 cm weighted blanket is too small for your child, then choose a 6kg for adults. Because the weight of the weighted blanket is distributed over a larger area, it is not too heavy to sleep under. Pay attention to 2 things:
- Can your child easily remove the weighted blanket independently?
- Is your child lying comfortably under the weighted blanket?
- Can your child move well under the weighted blanket?
Weighted blankets for children have a smaller area, to be easier to handle. The effect of the weighted blanket comes from the weight per square meter. For comparison: a 6 kg single weighted blanket has an area of 3 m2 (1.5 x 2). This is a weight of 2 kg per square meter. A 2.2 kg weighted blanket for children has an area of 1.08 m2 (0.9 x 1.2), which is a weight of 2.04 kg per square meter.
As you can see, the weight per square meter is about the same. Children therefore have just as much benefit from a 6 kg weighted blanket as from a 2.2 kg weighted blanket. It is for the children however, it is better to use a children's weighted blanket, because it is easier for them to lift is.
If your child sleeps in a single bed, you might be inclined to quickly choose a single weighted blanket to choose. It is good to understand that the effect comes from the weight that is on the body lies, not so much the total weight of the blanket. That is why we look at weighted blankets to the weight per square meter.
For comparison: a 6 kg weighted blanket with the size 150 x 200 has a weight of 2 kg per square meter. A weighted blanket of 2.2 kg with the size 90 x 120 has a weight of 2.03 kg per square meter. Almost the same then. A child small enough to be under a weighted blanket sleeping on 90 x 120 cm will notice the same effect as a 6 kg weighted blanket of 150 x 200. This is because only the weight that lies on the body is important for the desired effect.
Weighted blankets for children are smaller to keep the total weight lower, while you need at least 2 kg weight per square meter and the whole body must be covered be. It is very important that children can could easily move and pull off.
Example: your child weighs 18 kg but sleeps in a single bed. You might then say: I have a 6 kg weighted blanket of 200 x 150 cm is needed. But a 6 kg weighted blanket is for your child 33% of his own body weight. Quite heavy then.
That is why for children up to a weight of 25 kg we advise purchasing a children's weighted blanket. If your child weighs more than 25 kg and sleeps in a single bed, then you can consider a single weighted blanket to purchase. Always check if your child the weighted blanket:
- can easily pull off
