A weighted blanket is a useful tool for managing stress and anxiety, and it promotes better sleep. In addition, a weighted blanket helps you fall asleep faster and wake up refreshed. To ensure you sleep well under your weighted blanket, it is important to choose the right weight. A weighted blanket that is too light may not achieve the desired effect, while a weighted blanket that is too heavy can feel restrictive. How to choose a weighted blanket of the right weight is explained in this article.

10% of your own body weight

A weighted blanket is also called a weighted blanket or weighted blanket. The name says it all: a blanket that is weighted. The general rule of thumb for finding the right weight weighted blanket is to use about 10 percent of your body weight. For children, many occupational therapists recommend a weighted blanket that is 10 percent of their body weight plus 0.5 kg to 1 kg extra weight.

Suppose you weigh 70 kg. Then a weighted blanket of 7 kg fits you best according to this rule of thumb.

This formula is not a rule, but a recommendation. We notice that this is a good starting point for many of our customers. However, some people prefer a somewhat heavier weighted blanket, others a lighter one. This preference can vary per person.

Which weighted blanket suits me?

The purpose of a weighted blanket is to provide comfort and thereby create relaxation that promotes your sleep. If you feel uncomfortable because of a blanket that is too heavy, the weighted blanket will have the opposite effect.

In short: a weighted blanket should be heavy, but also comfortable. Once this is the case, a weighted blanket will do its job. Scientists call this effect 'Deep Pressure Stimulation', or in Dutch 'Diepe Druk Stimulatie'; a subtle pressure provides a feeling of security and a good night's sleep. Want to know how a weighted blanket works? Then read our article ‘How does a weighted blanket work?’.

We offer different weighted blankets: single weighted blankets, double weighted blankets and weighted blankets for children. Below you can read how to choose the right weight for each size.
